Stage Door California has created a new awards system to award excellence in the performing arts in Northern California. The Encore Awards will present awards to community, regional and youth productions. The system is meant to celebrate the work of theatre artists as well as help promote the producing companies.
How the Encore Awards work:
The producing company first submits an application online at www.stagedoorca.com. Once the application has been accepted the administrator will send an invoice for the consideration fee and arrange the show tickets for the judges. Each production will be judged by three judges. The judge panel is made up of active theater professionals with a minimum of 5 years experience. After attending the performance each judge submits a ballot with their scores to the administrator. Scores are then recorded. At the end of the awards season (December 15) the administrator will tabulate the scores and determine the nominees. At this stage Stage Door California will have someone from one of the participating producing companies review the scores to confirm that everything has been tabulated correctly. Nominees will be announced January 1. The winners will be announced during two awards ceremonies in late January.
Awards Classifications:
Community - a community theatre classification is any theatre who operates on a volunteer basis. Companies in this classification can offer their talent stipends or expense reimbursements, but do not pay an hourly wage or a living wage. Companies in the Community class can not hire performers that are members of Equity or have Equity contracts.
Regional - a Regional theatre classification is any producing company who hires Equity performers, pays an hourly wage to their talent or pays a living wage of any kind.
Youth - Youth productions are any production that is produced by a tuition based youth program, after school program or other program that is not attached to a school that the performers are at least 90% youth (18 and under)
